First, there were greener inks, followed by greener printers, and now, a green font? Yes, indeed it is true. Sure, you can squeeze more pages onto a single sheet, print on both sides of a sheet, print in draft mode, and now: you can print with holes in your letters. It’s called Ecofont, and their producers promise it will utilize 20% less ink when compared to normal printing. It is available for Windows, Macintosh, and Linux systems, and closely resembles Arial in appearance. Ecofont can be downloaded for free from the link provided in the resource area below.

In other green printing news, printing giant Xerox announced in June its efforts to make printing greener by going cartridge-free – their newest printer model series offers the capability to use solid ink sticks. They claim no stains will be forthcoming.

According to Xerox the new printer produces 90% less waste in ink than other printers, and keeping the Xerox history in mind, their research and development reports are relatively trustworthy.

This new development is called a ColorQube, and currently costs a whopping $15,000. It might be necessary to stick with recycled ink cartridges for today but in spite of the ColorQube’s high expense now, new technology tends to drop in price eventually. Businesses in the market for high-quality, waste-reducing printing equipment should consider this new option along with the rest.

Have you ever wondered what makes real estate properties ‘green’ or ‘eco friendly’? Hopefully I can help you learn how to identify properties that meet some or all of these green qualifications in both construction and operation. Whether you are looking to buy green, or you want to ‘green’ your present home in order to sell it I hope to help you in your endeavor, and especially if you are simply looking to implement easy green features and habits, creating a green home and a more eco-friendly lifestyle.

I definitely know there are countless things I could add to my list here, but for now I want to merely create the mood of what a green home would look like. One thing’s for sure, no matter how green you go, make sure it’s done in a light, joyful way that doesn’t impose on others. We are where we are at any given time in our lives, and there will always be someone greener than us! Green pride, should always be personal.

These green lifestyle choices not only enhance our health, but also our finances! Yeah green, puts green in your pocket!

So what features might make a property green or eco-friendly…

Usually homes are demolished, but do you know they can be deconstructed instead? Antique stores have known for centuries the brilliance of reclaimed and reuse of materials. Certainly a great percentage of a homes materials can come from a pre-used source. I know of one yoga studio that has the most gorgeous wood floors reclaimed from an old Bank of America historic building that was being refurbished. And it was free! Only the cost of removal! What a conversation piece! Just as relevant are materials derived from easily renewable sources, bamboo versus ancient oak trees.

The paint we use, low or zero VOC paint. You know that ‘new home smell’ we all love, usually from a fresh coat of paint? Well that’s the smell of your lungs being poisoned! There are many sources of green power or at least eco choices, such as solar panels for electricity, natural day lighting via skylights and low voltage lighting for the evening. Site orientation makes such a difference, imagine orienting the home toward the sun in colder climates and alternatively catching cool breezes in warmer climates? Not only that but using landscaping to help. Deciduous trees to shade windows in the summer, yet let in warm sun in the winter. Green comes in many shades! Overall, we should seek durable, healthy, sustain-ably sourced ‘green’ building materials, ones that are non-toxic thus helping improve indoor air quality.

In the garden permeable paving helps guide ‘fresh’ water to underground tables rather than run off via drain pipes to the salt water ocean. The use of native, zero or low water use gardens not only replace a strange obsession with antiquated English grass lawns but also encourage native birds and butterflies into your garden! Green landscaping can create a truly magical garden.

Not every green home will embody all features. The hope is that we are making lifestyle choices that are healthier for us, cheaper on a daily basis and kinder to our planet.

I think green, eco-friendly lifestyle choices are not only the logical thing to do, but the financially clever thing to do. I’m no Donald Trump, but if I had two homes, one build in the conventional manner with all toxic formaldehyde off gassing materials, with my kid suffering from asthma, expensive to heat and cool… then across the street is another home for sale, essentially the same design and price except it’s cheaper to run and healthier to live in… what is the choice?

The green one of course! No doubt you would choose the green, eco-friendly home. Ask anyone… Green is the new black!

If you have made all the traditional changes to your lifestyle but are trying to find another way by which you can make a difference to the environment, then you should look into green eco-friendly fashion. There have been attempts made to mass market green eco-friendly fashion to a global market, and some of them have not been successful because the clothing was not something that appealed to everyone. However, in recent years this has changed as more and more people have begun to make a transition toward a more organic way of life so that they can lessen the impact they have on the environment.

In fact, green eco-friendly fashion did not really get a break until movie stars began to wear these types of clothes in order to showcase their willingness to side with this movement. One thing that many people may not realize is that organic fashion is not as simple as having clothing that is made from pure cotton instead of a poly blend. The reason is that there are millions of pounds of pesticides put on cotton that is grown non-organically each year. So, by going out of your way to purchase green eco-friendly fashion options, you are lessening the amount of pesticide that is released into the atmosphere each year.

The good news is that with all of the attention the environment is getting and the number of people who are turning to green eco-friendly fashion as a way to help reduce their carbon footprint, has allowed for an increase in styles and designs that appeal to a broader audience. This means that you are going to be able to have more options available to you so that you can choose from those that will benefit you while still remaining in the category of green eco-friendly fashion.

Also, remember that we lead best by example. So, if you want to be as environmentally conscious as possible the best way to demonstrate this to others is by openly wearing and endorsing, green eco-friendly fashion. This way everyone who sees your unique style and fashion will be aware of your personal position on the environment. And, you will simultaneously be helping to reduce your impact on the environment. If just one person asks about your green eco-friendly fashion and decides to go with this more organic approach, you will have made double the impact.

Can you believe its back to school time already? For many of you, summer vacations have come and gone and you’re now ready for back to school time for your kids. In thinking back, wasn’t it exciting? I remember as a child, we’d always take our yearly family vacation, usually in July, and though it was always a lot of fun, come August, I seemed to always be excited and looking forward to going back to school again.

Well, as you’re busy getting your kids ready to start the new school year again, or even if they’ve already started like in my local neighborhood, here are a few tips for you to help you get ready this year the green and eco-friendly way!

1. Buy Local & Organic Foods & Snacks:
A great way to help your child stay healthy and eco-friendly this school year is to send them off with their own pre-packed lunches. This way you know that as a mom you are helping them get the best nutrition as possible during their day. In deciding what to pack, I recommend choosing local and organic foods and snacks. A few excellent choices are fresh fruits, vegetables, and nuts. And know that when you choose to buy organic and locally produced food, you are not only providing healthier nutrition for your kids, you are also helping to support your local farmers and economy as well as the environment too.

2. Use Reusable Plastic Containers:
Another great thing you can do to be green & eco-friendly this school year is to pack your kids healthy organic lunches using only reusable plastic containers. By using reusable plastic containers, you are helping to reduce the enormous mounds of waste that gets hauled out in garbage bags each day to be dumped into land fills from lunches made from pre-packaged food containers and plastic bags. When I was a child, it wasn’t very cool to carry your own lunch box container especially if it was plastic and made from Tupperware. However, times have changed and happily so. Now we have the opportunity to teach our children that it IS cool to bring their own lunch containers because it’s simply the right, green & eco-friendly thing to do.

3. Don’t Forget to Recycle:
While speaking about waste and garbage, don’t forget to recycle. Whether it’s the packaging from your organic food purchases or the paper waste products from your kids school lessons and projects, remember to recycle. If you haven’t started recycling in your home yet, don’t worry, it’s never too late to start and it’s very easy too. In your garage or wherever you have some extra space in your home, start by setting up a few extra trash buckets and label them. Things you should recycle are plastic containers, steel/tin/aluminum containers, milk cartons, cardboard boxes/containers, paper, and batteries. Then check within your local community to see if they have a recycling program or if there is a regular schedule for recycled trash pick up in your neighborhood.

4. Save Energy: Walk, Take the Bus or Carpool it:
This school year encourage your child to walk to school, if it’s at all possible, and save energy. This way you are also helping your child to get exercise and stay fit which is so important with the child obesity rate as high as what it currently is in this country. Or, if walking to school just isn’t feasible, you can also encourage them to take the bus whether it’s the public transportation system in your city or your school district’s yellow bus. However, if you still prefer or need to drive your child to school everyday, you can cut down on your gasoline bill and consumption as well as reduce your carbon emissions by suggesting to form a car pool with other local neighborhood mothers who may also prefer or need to drive their child to school.

5. Purchase Eco-friendly, Recycled School Supplies:
And last but not least, purchase school supplies that are eco-friendly, non-toxic and constructed from recycled materials. Purchasing eco-friendly for your back to school supplies doesn’t have to break the budget either. Now you can purchase green, eco-friendly school supply kits containing paper, folders, pencils, colored markers, crayons, scissors, etc. all for less than $20 which is a fantastic deal and well worth it as you will feel good knowing that you are buying better, safer, and healthier items for your kids as well as for the environment.

A recent study done of environmental factors completed at MIT brought to light some extremely interesting information. Here are just a few of the facts that the study stated:

  • Starbucks uses 2.3 billion paper coffee cups each year, resulting in 890,000 tons of waste.
  • There were between 4 and 6 million trees used to print the entire Harry Potter series.
  • More than 380 billion plastic grocery bags are used in the US each year.

What has this got to do with your business and your upcoming trade show? The answer can be summed up in one word: green. From Al Gore’s Nobel Prize-winning documentary, An Inconvenient Truth, to NBC’s “Green is Universal” campaign, it seems as though the entire world is taking notice of the importance of saving our planet and “going green.” The demand for eco-friendly items is growing each day and businesses are looking for ways that they can join in the “green” movement. Make a statement at your next trade show by giving out eco-friendly promotional products and you will be saying that you want to be a part of the solution.

Choosing the perfect trade show product can be time consuming. Limiting your choices to environmentally friendly promotional products can help significantly. You will be narrowing your search to include only promotional products companies that offer eco-friendly promotional products.

The best way to get someone to use a promotional product is to give them one that is both visually appealing and functional. There are several great options when it comes to eco-friendly promotional products. Long gone are the days where recycled paper and plastic were the only options. Due to the recent consumer trend towards “going green,” there is an extremely high demand for well-designed eco-friendly products. Below are just a few examples of eco-friendly promotional products that you can distribute at your next tradeshow.

Promotional USB Flash Drives
A key benefit of “going green” is saving trees. The less paper people use on a day-to-day basis, the better. USB flash drives are eco-friendly devices because they allow people to transport important data without having to print the information on paper. Spreadsheets and presentations can be transported and accessed from various computers without ever touching a page. Recruit potential customers at trade shows by offering USB flash drives. If your budget is tight, hold a raffle for one USB stick imprinted with your logo. The demand for these extremely popular promotional items will draw everyone to your booth. Plus, you will collect tons of leads when their business cards are dropped into the raffle buckets.

Promotional Drinkware
To help reduce the use of paper coffee cups and disposable plastic water bottles, trade show exhibitors can provide attendees with promotional drinkware. Imprinted drinkware makes a great eco friendly giveaway. There are several different varieties of mugs, tumblers, and sport bottles available. Since these are all reusable items, they promote a “green” way of thinking. A travel tumbler for the car is an item that several people find helpful. To help cut down on waste, provide attendees with promotional sport bottles and polycarbonate bottles for their water.

Promotional Bags
Rather than wasting another 380 billion plastic grocery bags, provide tradeshow attendees with organic cotton grocery bags. Several promotional products companies are now recognizing the need for attractive promotional bags that are also eco-friendly. The options include everything from organic tote bags to organic messenger bags. There’s even an organic bag recycler to store plastic grocery bags rather than throwing them away. By giving out an eco-friendly trade show bag, you will not only be providing attendees with something useful for the show, but for years to come.

In recent months, it seems that the trend of “going green” – living in an environmentally friendly way – has caught on with mainstream America. Clorox has started advertising green cleaning supplies. Paper towels and toilet paper made of recycled paper are cropping up on store shelves. Car companies are advertising hybrid vehicles, and celebrities boast about their extravagant eco-friendly lifestyles.

As a practical retailer, joining the green trend may seem too expensive or too difficult. You care about the environment, but you don’t have the time to install solar panels, grow grass on your roof, or conserve water with fancy plumbing. However, “going green” can be as simple as changing the store bags you use.

Enhance your image

Consider how many store bags go through your doors every day. Dozens? Hundreds? By changing to eco-friendly custom print bags, you can help the environment, and also brand yourself as an environmentally conscious retailer. Like businesses, consumers are starting to recognize the ecological benefits of green lifestyles. They’ll be more apt to do business with a company that shares their philosophy.

Saying your company has “gone green” is one thing. Showing your commitment to the environment with every custom print bag that leaves your store is quite another.

Eco-friendly options for custom print bags

Paper bags usually come to mind first when people think of eco-friendly bags. Paper certainly has built a good reputation for itself over the years. Paper bags are both biodegradable and recyclable, making them a very good choice for the green retailer.

Some suppliers offer paper bags incorporating 30 percent to 50 percent recycled content on a regular basis at no additional cost. If you decide to go 100 percent recycled paper in your custom print bags, talk to your bag supplier about options. And yes, that 100 percent recycled content bag will cost a little bit more.

Plastic bags, on the other hand, have built a negative reputation because, until recently, they have been non-biodegradable. If custom print plastic bags are a necessity for your business, discuss with your bag supplier the many options that are available.

Some of these options include using 100 percent recycled plastic for your store bags, or purchasing plastic bags with an additive that makes them biodegradable. You could even institute a recycling program right in your store. All of these options keep your business eco-friendly without limiting you to paper bags or the more expensive reusable bags.

Challenges with eco-friendly bags

The biggest challenge retailers will face with eco-friendly custom print bags is the cost. Unfortunately, eco-friendly bags tend to cost a little more than regular custom print bags.

Factors influencing the cost of your custom print bag are the size of your products going into the store bags, the percentage of ink printed on the bags, and the number of colors printed on the bag. Store owners can lower their cost for store bags by ordering in larger quantities, taking advantage of price breaks. For paper users, instead of going with 100 percent recycled paper bags, use less expensive recycled paper bags with 30 percent to 50 percent recycled material.

Overall, the costs for going green are small. Consider it an investment in future generations, and an immediate investment in customer goodwill toward your company.

Help the environment one bag at a time

By becoming a green business, you open yourselves to some great opportunities. For one, you will be doing your part to help the environment and maintain the planet for your children and grandchildren. You will attract more environmentally conscious consumers, which can give you an edge over your competition.

Choose eco-friendly custom print bags today and create a new name and image for your business.

With threats of global warming, the lack of rubbish disposal areas, the shortage of water and other things which affect the environment, having an environmental friendly approach for your company can be a good way to move forward. Stats show that the driving force behind going green is more personal than professional, with more people considering environmentally-friendly practices the right thing to do and that personal interest in environmental and social courses in general has increased. This increase in environmentally-friendly practices has also lead to an increase in Green exhibiting options. Adopting this green exhibiting is expected to grow rapidly over the next few years. However, there is one main obstacle to overcome before this can happen. Currently there are very few green options that perform and cost the same as the more traditional exhibiting options. Highlighting that not only is cost an important factor, but the lack of variety of green exhibiting options available. Although the adoption of green exhibiting has been low so far, fast growing interest will drive forward greater use of greener options, providing that exhibition contractors can overcome the obstacle of price, variety, and awareness. If contractors don’t get involved they’ll miss out! Top tips for Eco-friendly Exhibiting – Use recycled metals. Metal may not seem like the most eco-friendly material, but by using recycled or salvaged metal it is good ecological practice. – Paints. Instead of traditional paints, use Non-VOC paint as it is made from natural minerals and is competitively priced. – Recycled plastics. Using recycled plastic instead of virgin plastic has already made a huge difference to the environment. Research has shown, for every tonne of new plastic products made, using recycled plastic produces a carbon dioxide saving of 3.46 tonnes. Per tonnes this equates to running 195 average family cars, flying 502 passengers by jumbo jet and running 63 households for a year. – Energy-efficient lighting. By using CFL’s you will use 25-30& less energy and they last 4-16 times longer. Use LED’s as they have a lower operating cost and are very durable, lasting up to 10 years. – Timber. Use recycled wood as it is generally higher quality than new wood and is available in a wide range of styles. – Green giveaways. Choose an item which will minimise rubbish. Avoid plastic packaging, in fact, avoid plastic all together, unless it is recycled. Good examples of giveaways include recycled plastic pens, ceramic mugs or cotton/hemp tote bags. – Eco-friendly bags. It’s nearly impossible to attend a trade show and not gather a loads of literature, giveaways, and more. Receiving a bag from an exhibitor makes it much easier for attendees to lug around their haul. A good idea can be to use eco-friendly bags and to put your company information on this type of bag along with a eco friendly logo. This will all reflect well on your company. – Use recycled paper. If you are sending out invites to your stand or getting new business cards printed, use recycled paper. Instead of mailing your contacts, why not email them!

As strange as it may seem, it is only a recent societal development that has the average citizen dishing out some amount of concern for the well-being of the environment. Whether it was the media-storm of eco-friendly messages, gas prices sky-rocketing, or Obama’s new ‘green’ stimulus money, the American population as a whole can now be considered a tad-bit worried about our planet. Prior to this ‘revelation’, conservation and sustainable living were considered elitist left wing movements designed to take our eyes off of more important topics of conversation – like WMDs. Now that Americans are green – what do we do about it? US industry has taken terrific leaps and bounds to ‘green-ify’ its image – from the confusing eco-marketing campaigns for hip clothing apparel to the pastoral package imagery of organic foods. The word ‘Organic’ itself has traveled generations in meaning and is now worth billions of dollars to companies like Whole Foods, whose brand fully depends on people thinking they are ‘greener’ by buying their food. The truth is, most companies like these are rapidly re-branding with the primary goal of getting a different sort of green. There are a handful of companies which the public needs to keep an eye out for and support for being genuinely green-focused. These are companies that are often targeting a niche environmental problem and are doing their jobs very well. These businesses deserve the utmost support from both the private and government sectors – for our future truly depends on their continual evolution. So what are a few of these companies? * Tesla Motors: Tesla Motors is truly an innovator in creating cars of the future that can have an impact on today. Space enthusiast Elon Musk’s company has already created a successful electric sports car, the Tesla Roadster, that has caught the eye of many a celebrity. The next endeavor will be the cheaper and more accessible Model S. Hopefully smaller manufacturers like Tesla will have the support to grow and accommodate for many of the unemployed workers from teetering auto-industry giants. * Grid Alternatives: Grid Alternatives is a California non-profit that provides power to communities in need through alternative energy sources like Solar Cells. Companies like these not only address growing environmental problems, but also do so in a socially responsible manner that impacts communities across California. * Green Energy Technologies: The developer of the WindCube- a cutting edge wind turbine that is designed to be installed on commercial urban and suburban locations. Technologies such as the WindCube represent an eco-friendly option for city dwellers. More of our population is now condensed within urban centers than ever before. Transporting power over shorter distances will play an important role in stemming our energy-usage. How can we support companies like these? One way for other companies to support green technology is either by utilizing their products for enterprise needs, or by offering helpful services to them. Large and small businesses alike can consider making an investment in the future by purchasing something like a WindCube to supply their energy needs. One great example of this is Newton On Demand, a recruiting software company whose technology is currently powering the hiring and applicant management efforts of Grid Alternatives. This is extremely important because finding and retaining the brightest minds for an eco-friendly company like this will put the green-technology sector one step ahead. The more genius applicants that can be pulled towards helping our planet, the better. The easiest way for the public to support companies like these is also to utilize their products or services. Although most people still don’t have the cash (especially in the current economy) to purchase a new Tesla or WindCube, a non-profit like Grid Alternatives is largely supported through donations, where even a small amount can help.
